A Few Words for LeBron...

My friend Kenny now working in Miami for NPR did a piece on LeBron James for All Things Considered...
Don't Worry he gives my friend Jim, a Cleveland Sports Fan, the last word. Go Mavs!

I hate Watson

Columbusites have already heard me bitch about the IBM computer, who had home field advantages of all sorts. Most importantly was the signalling which is the most critical part of Jeopardy! Anyways, here is a fun little essay by Ken Jennings about the experience.

"Watson has lots in common with a top-ranked human Jeopardy! player: It's very smart, very fast, speaks in an uneven monotone, and has never known the touch of a woman. But unlike us, Watson cannot be intimidated. It never gets cocky or discouraged. It plays its game coldly, implacably, always offering a perfectly timed buzz when it's confident about an answer. Jeopardy! devotees know that buzzer skill is crucial—games between humans are more often won by the fastest thumb than the fastest brain. This advantage is only magnified when one of the "thumbs" is an electromagnetic solenoid trigged by a microsecond-precise jolt of current. I knew it would take some lucky breaks to keep up with the computer, since it couldn't be beaten on speed."

Best Victory Dance Ever

This is a trick shot video made by some third string quarterback at UConn. The accuracy is impressive, but what I found really striking was his amazing dance. If you aren't interested in the trick throws than you should fast forward to about 1 minute remaining (this website times videos by how much time is remaining). I don't think you will be dissapointed.

Awesome dance

This is getting out of hand

I love The Big Lebowski more than the average bear, but this is going too far. Or should I say, "OVER THE LINE!"

I'm sick of Lincoln hunting vampires, zombies in Pride and Prejudice and sea monters in Sense and Sensibility.

Bring on the pop culture apocalypse!

It's a Jersey Thing

So this morning I woke up and went out to my car and found this delightful note on it. As a brief background, people in New Brunswick, NJ apparently think that because they dug their car out of the snow and put something in the spot where their car was this means that they now have exclusive rights to this spot. Now, while I think that this is preposterous I respect this system and do not take spots that people have claimed thusly. This note was written to me by someone who thought that I had violated the system, which I had not.

By the way, there are two elderly people on my street who have handicapped parking spots in front of their houses. Also, it hasn't snowed in over a week.

Don't throw your gold away!

I don't know the story behind this. My brother sent it to my dad who forwarded it to me. That is all I know.

Snacks, Bitches!

Here's an appetizer I've been toying with recently.

Blue Cheese, Bacon, and Pear Crostini

1 baguette
butter
4 oz. cream cheese
4 oz. blue cheese
3 pears
6 slices of bacon
1 sprig of rosemary
black pepper
salt
sugar

Cut the baguette on the bias into 1/4" slices. Brush with melted butter and toast in the oven until golden brown and crunchy.

Dice the pears and reserve half for later. Put the other half in a pan with butter and a little sugar and caramelize over med-low heat. When the pears are almost done (syrupy, brown, and almost falling apart), throw the rosemary in for the last few minutes (don't strip the leaves off, just throw the whole stick in the pan). Remove the rosemary and season with salt and pepper. Move pears into a mixing bowl.

Clean the pan and then fry the bacon until crispy. Pat with a paper towel. Chop the bacon into small pieces and mix with the caramelized and fresh pears.

In separate bowl, mix cream cheese and blue cheese together.

Spread cheese mix on the crostini. Top with pear/bacon mix.

Eat.

Refudiate is now a word, thanks Sarah Palin!

The OED has made Sarah Palin's "refudiate" the word of the year. I don't know, I usually like British humor but this seems a little too dry even for my taste.

Here's a link to the NPR story

I think we should all make up words and propose them to the OED.

I propose "bigiot"

bigiot - noun, a person who is simultaneously bigoted and an idiot (e.g. "That Sarah Palin is a major bigiot")

bigiotry - noun, an action which displays one's idiocy and bigotry in one sublime action (e.g. Sarah Palin calling on "Peaceful Muslims" to "refudiate" the "Ground Zero Mosque" is an action of such breathtaking bigiotry that it leaves me almost speechless)

bigioted - adjective, the property of being simultaneously shockingly bigoted and impressively stupid

Apparently when you unroll scotch tape in a vacuum it creates x-rays. Think of that as the holiday season approaches.
